Crystal Ellis ’53, ’75, ’93 was the first African-American basketball player to play for the Falcons. However, legendary Coach Harold Anderson told Ellis, "You didn't come to BG to play basketball, you came to get an education." Ellis credits those words, and Anderson's refusal to let Ellis give up on his education when his stepfather was ill, for his success as a student, educator and person. Ellis began his teaching career at Libbey High School in Toledo and quickly rose to become an assistant principal and principal positions before becoming the first African-American to hold the post of superintendent for Toledo Public Schools.
